The Kennedy Meadows trailhead and campground is a good place to begin a trip into the Sierra Nevada because the PCTs steady ascent northward allows you to acclimate relatively slowly to higher altitudes. The best times to visit this trail are June through October. Technically most of the campsites are FFS but we didn't have an issue finding a site (may have been because of the major fires that week).
